BREAKING: Federal University Kisi Bill Passes Second Reading at the National Assembly

A “Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal University Kisi, Oyo State, and for Related Matters, 2024 (HB. 1387)” sponsored by Hon. (Dr.) Prince Olaide Lateef Mohammed passed its Second Reading in the Green Chamber on 14th January 2024. Leading the debate at the National Assembly, Hon. Olaide Mohammed highlighted the absence of a single federal higher institution in the Oke-Ogun zone of Oyo State. He emphasised that the closest federal university to Kisi requires a journey of no less than 200km, underscoring the critical need for accessible higher education in the region. Kisi, he noted, is strategically positioned and surrounded by several local government areas in Kwara and Niger States, making it a viable location for the proposed institution. The bill outlines that the Federal University Kisi will offer diverse and comprehensive courses in the humanities, sciences, and other areas of learning consistent with the standards expected of a university of the highest standing. Objectives of the Federal University Kisi Bill The bill seeks to: a) Foster the advancement of learning and provide equal opportunities for all persons, regardless of race, creed, gender, or political affiliation, to acquire higher and liberal education. b) Offer courses and facilities for learning, leading to the award of diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate degrees, and higher research qualifications across various disciplines, ensuring such opportunities are accessible to deserving individuals. c) Encourage and promote scholarship while conducting research in all fields of learning and human endeavour. d) Align the university’s activities with the social, cultural, and economic needs of Nigeria, and engage in other pursuits appropriate for an institution of the highest calibre. In his conclusion, Hon. Mohammed urged the House Members to support the bill and allow it to progress through all legislative stages. Following a debate, the bill was subjected to a vote, receiving unanimous support from members. It has now been referred to the House Committee on Tertiary Institutions and University Education for further legislative processes, including public hearings and committee reports. The bill, officially titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Medical Centres Act to Establish the Federal Medical Centre, Igboho, Oyo State, and for Related Matters 2024 (HB. 1386)”, was first read at the National Assembly in May 2024. It has now been reviewed by the Committee of the Whole and successfully scaled all legislative stages. With this passage, it advances to the Senate for concurrence, spearheaded by Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, the Distinguished Senator representing Oyo North Senatorial District. Once approved by the Senate, it will be presented to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for assent, marking a critical step toward its enactment into law. KPU National Body Pays Courtesy Visit to Hon. Polam at the National Assembly

Hon. (Dr) Prince Olaide Lateef Mohammed (Polam) received the Kishi Progressive Union (KPU) National Executives, led by the National President, Pharm. (Chief) Rahman Jimoh Bioku, in his office at the National Assembly on Wednesday. During the courtesy visit, the KPU National Executives presented seventeen agenda items aimed at fostering community development and enhancing the social and economic well-being of the people. Hon. Polam was urged to prioritize infrastructural development in the community, especially in healthcare, education, and road construction. He was also challenged to support programs that will create job opportunities for the youth in the constituency, enhance security, and promote peace and stability. Among the notable agenda items presented are: Construction of good motorable roads and adequate drainage systems in the Kishi metropolis Provision of a stable electricity supply Provision of clean and potable water by supporting water supply, reactivation of waterworks, dam, and its accessories Establishment of a tertiary institution in Kishi Building and equipping a modern High Court hall Creation of job opportunities for the youth in our community, either in the civil/public sector, military/paramilitary Support for farmers to ease their farming methods and provide a good market for their products Empowerment and loans for MSMEs and artisans in Irepo Local Government…. among others. The KPU National body pledged its commitment to working with Hon. Polam to ensure these objectives are achieved and urged him to use his influence and office to attract significant government projects to the Kishi community. The Senior Legislative Aide (SLA) to Hon. (Dr) Prince Olaide Lateef Mohammed, Alhaji Tajudeen Arikeuyo Badmos, Ph.D., in his welcome address, appreciated the community leaders for their visit and assured them of Hon.
